Kyle Griffin 01262012

Being a fighter means sometimes you train with people so closely they become family. In some cases, the people you train with are your family.  Since the early days of MMA, family ties have been the ones that bind. Of course, there’s the first family of MMA, the Gracies. Then the Shamrock brothers came. And today there’s the Miller, Diaz and also Griffin brothers also making themselves known.  While Kyle Griffin isn’t and exactly as much an MMA household name as … Read more

Chael Sonnen: Anderson Silva “Is As Relevant as Mike Tyson”

If he wasn’t so focused and sane, I’d say he’s crazy. Chael Sonnen has been bandying about a fake championship belt, claiming he is the champion, and dissing Anderson Silva and his accomplishments, every chance he gets. “Chael is Nuts,” Dana White told MMAJunkie.com at a Chicago press conference today. “He says all kinds of crazy things… he’s not the champion.” The real issue for Sonnen came up last week when he was given short notice for the Bisping fight. … Read more

The one-time unbeatable MMA phenom, Fedor Emelienko, has been on a rocky road lately. At 35 years old, the fittingly named ‘Last Emperor,’ hadn’t lost a match in over 10 years, until facing top-ranked Strikeforce fighters Fabricio Werdum, Antonio Silva, and Dan Henderson. After these three consecutive losses between June, 2010 and July, 2011, Fedor left Strikeforce and started a new winning streak. Fedor started working his way back in November with a unanimous decision against the intimidating big man, Jeff … Read more

A new article posted on MMAjunkie.com suggests the Gun Store has been banned from all future Zuffa promoted events. The reason for the ban? UFC’s new found home on network television.   The first UFC on FX event has come and gone and left us with some great insight into the future of the sport. First off, I think Jon Anik and Kenny Florian did a fabulous job as the “B team” for UFC commentators. Having the Fox Sports music and microphone covers also added to the historic value of the event. As far as the night of fights is concerned, check out these stats: 10 fights, 5 submissions, 3 T(KO)’s … Read more

Jay “The Thoroughbred” Hieron has had a busy last few months doing everything from guest starring in Person of Interest on CBS this past week’s episode, fighting for the Bellator Welterweight belt against Ben Askren and choking out MMA Fight Corner radio host, Phil Devine when he sat on set at the Hard Rock Hotel this Saturday. Having gone 22-5 in his MMA career at age 35 is impressive, but Hieron announced that he had no plans to enter the … Read more

UFC on FX: Guillard v Miller

And now…. it’s time! This main event features two top-ranked fighters in the lightweight division. Both coming off their first losses in two years, the winner hopes to stand in line for a title match, while the loser will have a tough road back to the top ranks. Melvin ‘The Young Assassin’ Guillard (46-10-3, 1NC) will look to end the fight early with his hasty agility and authoritative striking. Jim Miller (20-3) will methodically work his way into a submission, … Read more

UFC on FX: Ludwig v Neer

This welterweight bout between Duane ‘Bang’ Ludwig (29-11) and Josh ‘The Dentist’ Neer (32-10-1) is a toss-up, in my mind. Both have similar styles and both have long, impressive records against top ranked opponents… and some choppy recent fights. This one is likely to stay standing, as Neer will try to work inside with knees and elbows, while Ludwig will work to keep his distance with quick, powerful strikes. “It’s not like I’m the best guy in the world, but … Read more

UFC on FX: Easton v Papazian

Jared ‘The Jackhammer’ Papazian (14-6, 1NC) has won 4 of his last 5 fights by decision, while Mike ‘The Hulk’ Easton (11-1) has been using the guillotine to end his opponents… until his 2 year lay-off that ended with a victory full of powerful knees. Both of these bantamweights are quick and powerful strikers, but Papazian worries that Easton’s BJJ black belt may hold the edge, explaining, “… (Easton) is my biggest test.” Easton seemed more comfortable, saying, “He likes … Read more

UFC on FX: Barry v Morecraft

Heavy-handed striker, Pat ‘HD’ Barry (6-4) and the well-rounded, Christian Morecraft (7-2) begin the main card on FX. Morecraft  may be hunting for submissions, but Barry is sure to use his fists to keep the distance. It’s possible the heavyweights stand toe to toe and slug it out for three rounds… unless one of them finds the button. “Before I was in the UFC I loved watching him and always wanted to challenge myself against him,” Morecraft admits, “I know … Read more

UFC on FX: Rivera v Schafer

Middleweights, Jorge ‘El Conquistador’ Rivera (18-9) and Eric ‘Red’ Schafer (14-6-2) are two UFC veterans with similar pasts — quick rises, only to lose to top-ranked contenders; and at 39, Rivera says this will be his last fight. While Rivera will be looking for the knockout, the much larger Schafer, will be looking to submit. “Eric is a big 185er,” Rivera commented, “… he’s tough with very good ground skills.” Schafer conceded, “It will be a tough battle considering the … Read more
