Not long after his main event victory over Brock Lesnar, Alistair Overeem visited the Wynn Las Vegas (on New Year’s weekend) and allegedly shoved (or pushed) a woman in the face “causing her to stagger back” according to a citation issued by Las Vegas Police. The alleged assault took place at approximately 3am on January 2nd. The story was first reported by the Las Vegas Review-Journal and has since been picked up by multiple news sources.
Overeem has retained the services of famed Las Vegas defence attorney David Chesnoff. He is scheduled to appear in court February 21st at 8am, according to the district attorney’s office. Should Overeem be found guilty of the crime, he could face a maximum of 6 months in prison and no more than a $1000 fine.
“Alistair was not arrested, but was summoned to court,” Chesnoff said. “There are two sides to this story and we intend on vigorously defending this. Alistair maintains his innocence.”
Overeem, a former Strikeforce and Dream Heavyweight champion, earned a title shot against UFC champion Junior Dos Santos with his victory over Brock Lesnar at UFC 141.That fight is scheduled to take place sometime this summer, perhaps as early as memorial day weekend. At the time this report was published by the Las Vegas Review-Journal, UFC officials had declined to comment on the matter.
