Rampage’s Motivation in Question after Missing Weight

Rampage Jackson told Ariel Helwani of FUEL TV after missing weight by 6 pounds, that he had struggled to cut enough weight because of an injury sustained during training camp that kept him from getting his cardio going. He went so far to say that even doctors had advised him to bow out of the fight taking place tonight in Saitama, Japan. But being on UFC 144’s fight card meant a lot to Rampage, who told me in a post fight interview at UFC 135, that being on the Japan card was a must to pay homage to his PRIDE days.

Though opponent Ryan Bader could have declined fighting Jackson after he tipped the scales at 211, he said he didn’t travel all this way not to fight him. The bout will go on with Rampage having to forfeit 20% of his fight purse to Bader for missing weight.

With his motivation to fight being held in question by the MMA world, specifically by Rich Franklin; Rampage posted an apology on his Twitter for the slip in professionalism that read: “I’m sorry 2 my fans, the @ufc and my opponent. Thanks 2 Ryan 4 taking the fight. Sorry 4 not making weight.”
