At the UFC 148 post-fight press conference, UFC President Dana White said he hoped Cung Le would take a fight in China. It would appear that on November 10th, Le will headling the UFC’s first card in Macau, China and face Rich Franklin in a middleweight fight.
White confirmed the fight would be the main event on the card at the UFC on FOX 4 press conference.
Le is of Vietnamese descent and was born in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. During his career, Le fought in China numerous times and was a Sanshou champion. He went undefeated in his Sanshou career at 16-0. Sanshou martial arts is a style that brings kicks and attack from unique angles.
A resident of San Jose, CA, Le trains with AKA. Le amassed an undefeated kickboxing record and also has his own fight team. Aside from his MMA career, he’s also acted in several films such as Pandorum and Dragon Eyes. At UFC 148, Le defeated Patrick Cote by unanimous decision to bring home his 1st UFC win.
Initially, Rich Franklin was scheduled to fight Cung Le at UFC 147, but Franklin was removed from the fight and fought Wanderlei Silva at a catchweight of 190lbs. once Vitor Belfort injured his hand and could no longer fight on the card. After a five round war, Franklin defeated Silva in Brazil via unanimous decision and took home Fight of the Night honors.
MMA Fight Corner asked Franklin during the UFC 147 press conference how much he had to switch around his training to face Wanderlei, and the answer was, dramatically. Franklin told us he had gone to Singapore to train in Sanshou in preparation for Cung Le prior to UFC 147. At the time, he’d thought the training he had done for Le wasn’t at all suited to Silva’s style; but now, it seems it turned out to be a useful trip after all.
