UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Jon Jones has inked a worldwide deal to be sponsored by Nike. The signing was first reported by MMA Fighting.
When Jones steps into the cage to face Dan Henderson on Sept 1st, he will most likely be decked out in the company’s signature ‘Nike Swoosh’. Other than Jones, Anderson Silva and Yoshihiro Akiyama have been the only other UFC fighters to be sponsored by Nike in their respective countries.
Though the deal is confirmed, there’s no information on what the champ will receive in the deal except it was explained by MMA Fighting’s report that Jones will get his own line of Nike apparel and be featured in their worldwide campaigns.
It can be argued that Jones is undeniably one of the most dominating champions that the UFC has seen aside from Welterweight Champ Georges St. Pierre and Middleweight Champ Anderson Silva. Jones holds a career record of 16-1, with his only loss being a DQ early in his career for 12-6 elbows against Matt Hamill, a fight he was dominating until being disqualified for the illegal blows. He’s also defended the title three times in just two years, since defeating Maurico “Shogun” Rua to become the champion. Quinton “Rampage” Jackson , Lyoto Machida and Rashad Evans all faced Jones and lost.
Former PRIDE champion Dan Henderson will challenge Jones for the UFC Light Heavyweight Title next at UFC 151 in Las Vegas, NV on September 1st. “Hendo” is best known for his heavy hands and top level wrestling. Jones is always tough to takedown, but Henderson’s “H-Bomb” one punch knock out power should make for an interesting fight against Jones.
