The newest promotion in MMA, the World Series of Fighting held a press conference today at the Planet Hollywood in Las Vegas and revealed that their first ever event will air live on November 3rd at 7:30 PDT, 10:30 EST on NBC Sports Network. Las Vegas’ Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino will host the first event inside the PH Live. The organization is led by President Ray Sefo, a legendary K-1 kickboxer, and CEO Sig Rogich who has 40 years experience working in the sports industry.
“As of Saturday, November 3rd, we are live on NBC for the first time, NBC Sports Network. I’m basically proud to know that we’ll be the first to ever have an event on NBC Sports Live,” Sefo said. In addition, WSOF’s deal with NBC will be a one-year deal that should feature around 8-10 fights in that time.
The first 2-hour broadcast will feature former WEC Bantamweight Champion, Miguel Torres, who was recently released from the UFC. Torres will headline the main event on the first fight card, his opponent is not yet known.
“It’s a great pleasure for me to fight for the World Series of Fighting. For me it’s a new future, it’s a bright future, being on NBC Sports it’s a huge thing for me, it’s a big deal for all of us. I look forward to coming out on November 3rd and bringing on the best fight, the best main event I can do for you guys,” Torres said.
On the televised card Gregor Gracie will face Tyson Steel, Ronys Torres vs Brian Cobb and Josh Burkman vs Gerald Harris. Bobby Lashley, Roger Huerta, Brian Cobb, Rolles Gracie are also signed on to appear on the first fight card. Sefo also confirmed, James McSweeney, Gesias “JZ” Cavalcante will face Las Vegas local, John Gunderson, in the prelims.
Initially, the WSOF was looking to implement a tournament format, but instead decided to go with head to head bouts being that fans are more familiarized with that style of match ups. Sefo indicated that the rules will be within the NSAC’s regulations.
While the UFC has an Octagon, Bellator a cage, and Strikeforce a hexagon, Sefo said the WSOF will rock an Decagon, a ten-sided cage which he even admitted might be a little bigger than anticipated. It’s dimensions are 28 ft x 28 ft, but that could change by time fight night happens.
As a former fighter, Sefo offers fighters a presence that they may not be used to, someone who’s walked in their shoes and been through the same trials and tribulations along the way. A repeated motto Sefo already has in place is that he will make this organization about the fighters and the fans.
“We’ll win you over for sure by bringing you the best and incredible fights that we can provide. We also look to put the fans and the fighters first and to promote the best events and love the sport that we all have come to love,” Sefo promised.
Still a head coach of fighters such as Jay Hieron and Martin Kampmann at Xtreme Couture, Sefo has no intention of walking away from coaching with his new role as President of the WSOF. “I love challenges,” Ray stated. “I know being the president of a company is a huge responsibility. I know being a coach is a huge responsibility. I feel right now I can wear both hats and as long as I can do that, I’m good with it.”
As far as debuting the WSOF on the same night that Frank Mir and Daniel Cormier will go head-to-head in Strikeforce’s last heavyweight bout on Showtime, Sefo didn’t seemed concerned about those fights stealing their thunder. “That’s a great card, but I’m positive and I’m very proud of our card and I know for a fact our card is going to be just as good. I know NBC Sports will do their best to promote this, as well as us and Planet Hollywood. I feel like we have an amazing card on the night. And obviously we only have 3 fighters here today, but there’s some big names yet to be announced as well.”
Tickets for the WSOF will go on sale tomorrow, Friday, September 7th and can be purchased through their website.
