In August 2012, the life of “The Coach”, Shawn Tompkins was celebrated at the First Annual Shawn Tompkins Memorial Golf Tournament with a number of UFC, media, and NHL personalities in attendance. A portion of the proceeds, benefiting the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Southwestern Ontario, will be presented at the Adrenaline Training Centre, 1794 Dundas Street, Unit 1, London (rear parking lot) on Friday, October 19th at noon. On hand will be Rogers’ Sportsnet UFC Central host, Mr. “Showdown” Joe Ferraro; CTV London sports anchor, Norman James; Team Tompkins representative, Mark Hominick; and Tompkins’ widow, Emilie.

Known for a steady, guiding hand in developing his athletes, Tompkins was nicknamed “The Coach.” The closely-knit Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) community was devastated over Tompkins’ sudden death in August 2011 at the age of 37. A native of Tillsonburg, Ontario, Tompkins opened Adrenaline Training Centre in London where he made an impact in the sport, training notable fighters including Hominick, Sam Stout, and Chris Horodecki, who later bought the Centre when Tompkins relocated to Las Vegas.

Golf tournament director, Joe Botnick, worked hard to deliver incredible sponsorship, prizes, and people in honour of Tompkins. “The primary goals in creating the memorial golf tournament were to celebrate Shawn’s life, give Shawn’s family, friends and MMA fans a day to have fun, and raise funds for charity. We achieved all these goals and everyone had a great time. It was an honour and privilege for me to help bring this event forward.”

The tournament, which took place at the FireRock Golf Club near London, offered the opportunity to celebrate Shawn Tompkins’ life. “Events like this are really what make it worth celebrating and reminding us that even though we lost him we can still keep his memory alive and do something good with his name,” said Emilie Tomkins.
Plans for the 2nd Annual Shawn Tompkins Memorial Golf Tournament are scheduled for August 25, 2013.
