World Series of Fighting Plans Future Belts and Multiple Shows a Year

The MMA World Series of Fighting is about to make its splash in Las Vegas, NV with its inaugural fight card on November 3rd at the Planet Hollywood’s PH Live which seats about 7,000. WSOF President, Ray Sefo said that they’re anticipating to fill all the seats in the house.

Wednesday afternoon the promotion held a media conference call with main event fighters Andre Arlovski and Devin Cole and featured light heavyweight main event fighters Anthony Johnson and DJ Linderman.

With plans to have mutliple events a year, possibly bringing in women’s fights at some point and eventually have title matches as well,  Sefo broke down when those plans may get rolling.

“It’s just like anything, when you start something, obviously you want to start slow. We’ve overcome some bumps along the way and I think those bumps became a blessing in disguise because we’re able to sit back and reflect on what we needed change and so on. I think when things starred falling into place, the stars were aligned for us to have the guys that we have,” said Sefo.

Now that the promotion has no competition when it airs on NBC Sports Network on November 3rd with Strikeforce’s cancellation, the path is paved for the WSOF to be in the spotlight. “Obviously we want everybody to tune in. The ratings for us, obviously that’s something that’s really important to us and of course, putting on a great show. And with the card that we have, I have no doubt in my mind that these guys will come to perform,” Sefo said of his expectations.

Anthony Johnson had spoke with MMA Fight Corner on Tuesday in an exclusive interview where he expressed how excited he was to land with the promotion.

“It’s an honor to be able to be on the first show ever for World Series of Fighting. I mean, I’m happy to be there, I have no complaints about these guys. As far as I know, most of the guys that are part of the organization that helped running it and got it started have been in a couple of fights themselves, even if it was in a ring or a cage. They know what we’re going through and what we’ve been through as fighters, so they understand the business inside the cage and boxing ring, or whatever, and outside. So, I think this is going to be around for a long time.”

His opponent DJ Linderman will be fighting on the card after having been with various fighting promotions over the past few years. This opportunity to fight Johnson came at a great time in Linderman’s career which puts him at ease coming into the matchup.

“I feel confident as much as I can be. I’m at the top of my game right now, I’m feeling right now. I’m injury free. I’m 110 percent right now. There hasn’t been a fight I have been probably I have been 110 percent. I feel great to fight Anthony Johnson. I come into every fight relaxed. I’m going to come in there and be aggressive and more aggressive than Anthony and it’s going to be a great fight between us two,” Linderman said in the conference call.

Linderman and Devin Cole have fought twice before and now that they’re fighting in the same promotion, but in different weight classes, the two decided to train together instead of looking for a rubber match. “It kind of cool two guys coming from smaller gyms and getting this opportunity.” Cole said.

For future events, Sefo said the plan is to add more events and branch out from Vegas eventually. “We would like to put on 8-12 events a year, but that’s just something that we just started, again we’re taking one step at a time. You got to crawl before you walk.”  He added the first few events we’re going to be in Vegas and then WSOF is looking at venues all over the country.  New Jersey specifically mentioned as one possible venue for the future.

Like the addition of a women’s division that was something Sefo said could come in time. He also explained there will be titles for the WSOF in time.  “In terms of individual titles, that’s something that we’ll have to look at after this fight. It’ll probably take like three events to kind of see who can set the tone for the league and determine crowning a champion.”
