A Brazilian news source, No Mundo Das Lutas, is reporting that Jose Aldo (21-1, MMA) and Frankie Edgar (14-3-1 draw, MMA) will square off in the Octagon at UFC 156 rumored to take place in Brazil. January 19, 2013 is the current target date for the fight card. No city has yet been reported for the fight card.
The two were supposed to fight in early October at UFC 153 as the main event in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, until Aldo suffered a setback with an infection to a foot injury he had suffered in a motorcycle accident. Anderson Silva saved the card by fighting Stephan Bonnar at light heavyweight in the main event.
This will be Aldo’s 4th title defense of the UFC featherweight title. He was previously the WEC featherweight champ and had twice defended the belt under that promotion as well. When the WEC merged with the UFC, Aldo was promoted to UFC Featherweight Champ.
Former UFC lightweight champ, Frankie Edgar, is making his debut in the UFC’s 145 pound division. After losing the belt to Benson Henderson and also the rematch against Henderson at UFC 150, Edgar made the decision to go down a weight class.
At the time of this report, no confirmation from the promotion had been made to validate the fight will in fact happen at the reported date and time.
