With Stephen Thompson sidelined from his scheduled match-up with Besam Yousef due to a knee injury, it has been announced that Matt Riddle is to replace the welterweight at UFC 154. The news was confirmed today on UFC.com.
Although Riddle has not fought since his UFC 149 win over Chris Clements, he recently made headlines when MMAJunkie.com revealed that Riddle was suspended for 90 days after failing his UFC 149 drug test with traces of marijuana in his blood stream. With his suspension now officially complete, and his win over Clements overturned to a no-contest, Riddle can focus on regaining his momentum with a win over Besam Yousef.
After a disappointing UFC debut against Simon Thoresen, who handed Besam Yousef his first career loss, the Swede is in desperate need of a decisive win come November 17. With a record of 6-1, with all 6 wins under the The Zone FC banner in Sweden, Yousef was arguably one of the top prospects in Sweden prior to his UFC debut. A win over the likes of Matthew Riddle would significantly impact his standing in the welterweight division.
UFC 154 takes place November 17th in the Bell Centre in Montreal, Canada and is headlined the highly anticipated return of welterweight champ Georges St-Pierre against interim champ Carlos Condit. The Matt Riddle vs. Besam Youef bout is expected to be a part of the preliminary portion of the fight card.
