Why are we MMA fans so fickle?

Two years ago, as GSP and Anderson Silva were forming a devastating path of destruction towards the throne of #1 pound for pound fighter, every MMA fan in the world wanted to see them fight each other. Now, 2 years later, with the emergence of Jon Jones, nobody seems to care.

Sitting cageside Saturday night in GSP’s hometown, reminded me just how popular he is. Over 17,000 screaming fans were chanting his name, waiving Canadian flags and roaring for every takedown, guard pass and jab he landed. When the cameras would pan to Anderson Silva sitting ringside, the crowd would pop at the potential of the biggest superfight in MMA history.

Naturally, as I awoke yesterday morning I logged on to various MMA message boards to read how others perceived the event and the potential of this superfight. I was shocked by what I was reading. “Who cares about GSP vs. Silva?” or “Jones vs. Silva is the REAL superfight” and the comment that made me literally LOL “If Condit can knock down GSP with a headkick, Silva would send him to the hospital in under 2 rounds.”

As I read through negative comment after negative comment on the Silva vs. GSP superfight, I was reminded of that ex-girlfriend that each of us have. You know the one I’m referring to. You’d take her to an expensive restaurant, but she wanted to go to the new one that opened up down the street. You’d buy her beautiful diamond earrings, but she wanted a diamond bracelet instead.

Let’s not forgot that over the last 12 months, almost half of all major main events have been scrapped or altered due to injury. Two years ago, we were all begging Dana White to set up this GSP vs. Anderson Silva superfight. Now, as we have a chance to see the fight of the century, we’re actually telling the UFC we’d rather see Silva vs. Jones.

Unlike Mayweather vs. Pacquiao, this superfight is very much relevant and possible. While the MMA landscape may have changed over the last 2 years, both Anderson Silva and GSP remain champions with long winning streaks under their belts.

Think of it this way. Your girlfriend is begging you to propose and told you the exact ring she wants. You go to your jeweler, buy the ring you’ve been saving the last 2 years to purchase and only after your proposal does she say “oh actually, I don’t want that ring anymore, I like a different ring now.” Would you ever put that much time and effort into something she apparently “REALLY” wanted again…like ever?

This is my plea to the MMA universe. We BEGGED Dana White and the UFC to make this fight for the last 2 years. Now that we have a real chance of getting it, let’s not allow an improbable Silva vs. Jones fight kill the momentum we have gained towards a probable and realistic Silva vs. GSP fight. If this fight doesn’t happen, it should be because Silva or GSP doesn’t want it, not because the fans don’t.

Do we as MMA fans really want to be the fickle ex-girlfriend who always wants what she can’t have? I know I personally left that girl a long time ago and for good reason!!!

  • Excellent article man! Personally watching that fight, i dont believe gsp has much of a chance against silva as silva would have killed condit in the first round…but gawd damn that super fight has to happen!!! Ill be there with bells on

  • Thanks Mike,

It’s hard to compare how GSP would do against Silva, with his performance against Condit. The main difference is GSP’s top game. Condit said at the post fight press conference he expected to be able to scramble more on the bottom but GSP was just too strong. If Anderson Silva has any weakness, its his takedown defence and working from the bottom…which are GSP’s strengths. So it has a chance to be a very competitive fight. I think the main question is, what weight will these two fight at. The closer to 170 the fight is contested at, the better for GSP.
