Firas Zahabi: Nick Diaz is the #1 contender, Not Hendricks

[singlepic id=608 w=320 h=240 float=left]All it seems we’ve heard these days is how much everyone wants a super fight between Georges St-Pierre and Anderson Silva. But GSP’s head trainer at TriStar gym, Firas Zahabi said he has different plans for the welterweight champ.

Perhaps it’s a matter of unfinished business, but Zahabi said suspended UFC welterweight Nick Diaz, is who he thinks should be next in line to fight GSP.

“I think Diaz is the guy who deserves it most,” said Zahabi, in a recent interview with “His fight with Carlos (Condit) was so close. Who knows? People judge it both ways.”

Zahabi pointed to the Strikeforce title run Diaz had before joining the UFC, adding, “He climbed the ladder all the way. Johny (Hendricks) deserves it very much, but Diaz has been there longer and done more fights and has bigger wins.”

Diaz won’t be eligible to reapply for a fight license with the NSAC until February 4, 2013.  Hendricks has been hungry for a title shot and has earned his way over the past year with devastating knockouts over top contenders, Jon Fitch and Martin Kampmann.

However, Diaz was on tap to fight St-Pierre at UFC 137 until Diaz was pulled for missing commitments. Then GSP was injured, withdrew from the card and Penn vs Diaz took place on the card.  Diaz then called out GSP to fight him immediately following his win over BJ, something that enraged St-Pierre. The bout was reset for UFC 143, but was scratched when GSP injured his knee and Condit replaced him against Diaz.
