In effort to save the final Strikeforce card before the promotion bids the MMA world adieu, Jorge Masvidal (23-7, MMA) is reportedly on tap to fight Pat Healy (28-16, MMA) in a non-title bout at Strikeforce: Champions.
MMAJunkie first reported the matchup.
Healy was originally supposed to fight Strikeforce lightweight title holder Gilbert Melendez, twice. But he bowed out of both match-ups due to a shoulder injury.
Healy has won five in a row, earning his last victory over Mizuto Hirota in July. Since there won’t be a title on the line in the lightweight contest and Strikeforce folding, Healy will look to do his best to prove he belongs in the UFC.
In his last fight, Masvidal defeated Justin Wilcox via split decision at Strikeforce: Rockhold vs. Kennedy. He’s currently 3-1 in his last few fights and holds a win over Healy’s twin brother Ryan.
Strikeforce: Champions takes place January 12 at the Chesapeake Energy Arena in Oklahoma City. The card will be headlined by welterweight champion Nate Marquardt facing Tarec Saffiedine and Strikeforce Grand Prix Champion Daniel Cormier taking on Dion Staring.
