UFC Flyweight Champ Demetrious Johnson Injured – Out of Fight vs John Moraga

Demetrious-JohnsonIt was confirmed on UFC.com on Tuesday that UFC Flyweight Champion Demetrious Johnson suffered an undisclosed injury that will prevent him from defending his belt a second time against John Moraga.

The title tilt was expected to take place as the main event of The Ultimate Fighter 17’s finale on April 13, 2013 in Las Vegas, NV. While the venue had not been officially announced by the promotion, it’s been rumored that the bout was set to take place inside the Mandalay Bay Events Center, a much larger venue than usual for TUF finales.

The search for the new main event is already underway and is expected to be announced in a few days.

Johnson won the UFC’s Flyweight Tournament to earn his shot to fight for the inaugural Flyweight title. He defeated Joseph Benavidez via split decision at UFC 152 to become the division’s first ever champion. Most recently, he defended the title against John Dodson earning a unanimous decision win.

Moraga has compiled a seven fight win streak and has finished both of his opponents in the UFC. At his debut at UFC on FOX 4 in August, he knocked out Ulysses Gomez in the first round. He then submitted Chris Cariaso via guillotine choke at UFC 155.

In addition to this news, the UFC also confirmed that Sam Sicilia and Maximo Blanco will clash at featherweight at the TUF 17 Finale.
