When UFC Flyweight Champion Demetrious Johnson disclosed he had an injury that would prevent him from fighting John Moraga at The Ultimate Fighter Live Finale on April 13, the UFC lost it’s main event for the fight card. UFC President Dana White tweeted that Urijah Faber (Rank 2) will now face Scott Jorgensen (Rank 7) in a bantamweight main event that should promise non-stop action.
At UFC 157 this past Saturday, Faber (27-6, MMA) axed any criticism that he’d lost a step by taking the back of top ranked Ivan Menjivar and hanging on for a first round rear-naked choke victory. Prior to the win, Faber had dropped a decision in a bout for the Interim Bantamweight Championship to Renan Barao.
Jorgensen (14-6, MMA) comes into the fight having just ended a two fight losing skid. He too had lost to Barao, and then Eddie Wineland in all out brawl that earned both men Fight of the Night honors. The 30-year-old bantamweight is also coming off of a first round rear-naked choke submission win over John Albert at UFC on FOX 5 in December.
Though both are WEC alumni, they never faced each other while fighting with the now defunct promotion since they competed in different weight classes while with the promotion. However, the two have trained together in the past. To add to the drama, Jorgensen tweeted that he’d never be where he is if Faber didn’t convince him to reach for higher goals.
“Me n @UrijahFaber gonna putting on damn show at @ufc tuf finale live. Crazy I wouldn’t be fighting if he hasn’t talked me into in college!” Jorgensen tweeted. “The California Kid” also tweeted “2 buds punching eachother!” after the scrap was announced.
The Ultimate Fighter season 17 Finale will take place in Las Vegas, NV and is confirmed by UFC officials to be set for the Mandalay Bay Events Center. The evening will also feature the second pair of women to throw down in the Octagon, a battle between Miesha Tate and Cat Zingano.
