For Edgar (15-4-1), it’ll be the first time in the last three years that he steps into the Octagon without fighting for a title. All of his past seven fights have been a fight for a title in one way or another. The former lightweight champ comes into this matchup having lost his last three. First he lost his strap to Benson Henderson at UFC 144. Then, Edgar lost again in a closely contested rematch. In his most recent war, Frankie went the distance with UFC Featherweight Champ Jose Aldo, but lost the fight via unanimous decision. Edgar remains ranked as the number three fighter in the 145 lb. division.
Charles Oliveira (16-3, 1 NC) comes into to meet Edgar coming off of a one punch knockout loss to Cub Swanson. Additionally, Oliveira did not make weight when he fought Swanson at UFC 152. However, the 23-year-old Brazilian has earned all of his wins in the UFC by way of submission.
Jackson MMA standout Cub Swanson (19-5) has been ripping through the opposition in the featherweight division and has picked up four wins in a row. Now ranked at number five with the UFC, Swanson manhandled number six ranked Dustin Poirier just last month. Prior to that win Swanson knocked out Charles Oliveira, Ross Pearson and George Roop. This time around Swanson will face Dennis Siver who was his initial opponent for the UFC on FUEL TV 7 card.
Siver (21-8) has won both of his scraps since dropping to featherweight. With back-to-back wins over Diego Nunes and Nam Phan, the 29-year-old striker will finally make his return from injury to square off against Cub. Currently Siver is ranked at #6, but has a chance to move up the ladder with a win over Swanson.
UFC 162 will also feature another pair of top ranked featherweights on the card, contenders Ricardo Lamas and Chan Sung Jung are slated to go toe-to-toe on the card as well. The main event of the July card is a middleweight title fight between Anderson Silva and challenger Chris Weidman.
