As confirmed by World Series of Fighting President Ray Sefo Jon Fitch (24-5-1-1 NC) vs. Josh Burkman (25-9) will indeed headline the World Series of Fighting’s third endeavor when the promotion returns to its home base of Las Vegas, NV on June 14th. No venue has been set, though it will air once again on NBC Sports Network.
However, there will be no title at stake.
In a report Thursday on MMAFighting.com, WSOF senior-executive VP Al Abdel-Aziz said the they’ve decided to put adding titles on hold for now.
“Right now, we’re concerned with putting on fun fights for fans,” he told MMA Fighting. “In the process, for guys like Marlon Moraes, Justin Gaethje, Josh Burkman, and many others, we will make sure that when they get title shots they will have earned it. A title fight has to mean something to the promotion.”
In the WSOF 2 conference call, Sefo had stated that titles could come into play for the WSOF by their third or fourth fight card. But for now, that has been put on the back burner.
Jon Fitch will make his debut with the promotion when he steps into the decagon against Burkman. The two previously collided in the UFC with Fitch submitting The Ultimate Fighter season 2 competitor in the second round via rear-naked choke. Following his loss to Demian Maia UFC 156, Fitch was released from the UFC after going 1-2-1. Against Maia, Fitch was outclassed in most aspects of the fight and Maia walked away with the unanimous decision win.
At WSOF 2, Burkman made a statement by destroying Aaron Simpson in the first round of action. Simpson was knocked out and Burkman said he felt he’d paid his dues and earned his title shot. The 32-year-old Burkman was released from the UFC in 2008 after losing three consecutive fights. Since his departure, he’s gone 7-1 in his last eight.
