According to news from Brazilian source, News MMA, UFC 163 has added a welterweight battle between top ten ranked Demian Maia (#5) and Josh Koscheck (#10). Both fighters last fought in February and will meet in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil on August 3 at the HBSC Arena.
The UFC has not confirmed the booking, but the match-up does exist on Sherdog.com.
Most would think that Koscheck has a must-win situation ahead after being TKO’d by Robbie Lawler at UFC 157. The loss was his third in his last five bouts. “Kos'” two wins in that stretch was a knockout win over Matt Hughes at UFC 135 and a split decision in his favor over Mike Pierce at UFC 143.
Maia, on the other hand, has won four of his last five. His lone loss was to Chris Weidman at middleweight. Following the Weidman loss, Maia dropped to 170 where he’s won three straight. In his last battle at UFC 156, he “out-Fitched” Jon Fitch using his ground game to hand the former UFC contender a loss. Fitch, also a former training partner of Josh Koscheck’s, was subsequently cut from the organization.
UFC 163’s main event is expected to be a title fight for the UFC featherweight strap between Jose Aldo and Anthony Pettis.
