UFC officials confirmed Monday that a bantamweight contest is on tap for the September 21 fight card. Ivan Menjivar will meet Kid Yamamoto in Toronto, Canada at UFC 165.
“The Pride of El Salvador” (25-10) last fought at UFC 157 where he suffered a first round submission loss to Urijah Faber. Prior to the loss, Menjivar had won four of five with a lone setback in that stretch to Mike Easton.
The 36-year-old “Kid” Yamamoto (18-6, 1NC) hasn’t fought since UFC 144 last February where he suffered his third consecutive loss inside the Octagon. In his last six bouts, Yamamoto holds only one win. With his back up against the wall coming into this scrap, the knockout artist will definitely need to punch his way into the win column to avoid the dreaded cut list.
The event expected to take place in the Air Canada Centre will be headlined by a light heavyweight title fight between current champ Jon Jones and challenger Alexander Gustafsson.
