A middleweight collision has been announced to take place as part of UFC 165 in Toronto, Canada. Verbal agreements are in place for top ranked Costa Philippou (#7) and Canada’s own Francis Carmont to trade leather.
The news was reported on FUEL TV’s UFC Tonight Tuesday.
Philippou (12-2, 1NC) was expected to fight Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza on the UFC on FX 8 card until he was derailed by an eye injury and forced to withdraw from the bout. The 33-year-old teammate of UFC Middleweight Champion Chris Weidman has been on the rise in the 185-pound division compiling a 5-fight win streak. In his last fight, Philippou defeated Tim Boetsch via third round TKO.
Tri Star trained Carmont (21-7) is on the verge of cracking into the top ten of the division. Currently he’s notched 10 straight wins. At UFC on FOX 7, Carmont took home a decision over Lorenz Larkin though many viewed the decision as controversial. He also took home a razor thin split decision win at UFC 154 over Tom Lawlor.
UFC 165 will emanate from the Air Canada Centre in Toronto, Canada on September 21. UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Jon Jones will put his title on the line against Alexander Gustafsson in the main event.
