UFC President Dana White told reporters is Rio de Janeiro, Brazil during the UFC 168 media tour that the UFC has renegotiated a contract with heavyweight Fabricio Werdum and that there’s a chance he could get to fight the winner of UFC 166’s title fight.
UFC 166 will take place on October 19 in Houston, TX. It will be headlined by a rubber match between current heavyweight champ Cain Velasquez and challenger Junior dos Santos.
While White did not confirm if Werdum would in fact get the next title shot, he said he is right at the top of the contender’s list in the heavyweight division.
“I see a lot of good things happening for that guy in the future. Good fights,” said White.
“Werdum is coming. Yes, Werdum is on his way to a title shot,” added White.
Since making his return to the UFC, Werdum has won three straight fights. Werdum put on a Fight of the Night performance over Roy Nelson at UFC 143. Next he stopped Mike Russow at UFC 147.
Following the win, Werdum went on to coach The Ultimate Fighter Brazil season two opposite Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira. A year passed by before Werdum was to compete again in the Octagon. At UFC on FUEL TV 10 the two coaches squared off and Werdum was able to get “Minotauro” to verbally submit to an armbar.
