UFC 173 in Las Vegas has added two battles to the upcoming May 24, 2014 fight card. Top ranked bantamweights TJ Dillashaw (#5) and Takeya Mizugaki (#7) will trade leather. Lightweights Al Iaquinta and Mitch Clarke will also go head-to-head at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.
UFC officials confirmed verbal agreements are in place for both bookings Wednesday night.
Dillashaw (9-2) erupted as one of the top bantamweights to watch in 2013 after going 3-1 through four fights. His only loss in that streak was a highly criticized split decision against Raphael Assuncao. At UFC Fight Night 35, Dillashaw bested Mike Easton, earning a decision in his favor.
Mizugaki (19-7-2) has won four straight and went 3-0 in 2013. With his most recent coming against Nam Phan, Mizugaki will look to move up the ranks with a win over the Team Alpha Male product. To date, Mizugaki was only finished twice in his career. He suffered a submission loss to Dillashaw’s teammate Urijah Faber while under the WEC banner.
Also announced, “Ragin” Al Iaquinta (8-2-1) is set to battle Mitch Clarke. The Long Island native trains out of the Serra-Longo camp and will join his teammate Chris Weidman on the fight card. An Ultimate Fighter season 15 finalist, Iaquinta returned from a year hiatus to rack up 3 straight wins. He last defeated Kevin Lee via decision at UFC 169.
Canada’s Mitch Clarke (10-2) brought home his first win in the Octagon at UFC 161. Since getting the decision nod over John Maguire, he has not competed. The 28-year-old lost his first 2 fights in the UFC to John Cholish and Anton Kuivanen respectively.
UFC 173 is expected to be headlined by a middleweight title fight when current champion Chris Weidman puts his belt on the line against Vitor Belfort.
